SEO stands for search engine optimisation. The phrase basically means to build your website in a way that it's performance is optimised to be indexed higher within the search engines for particular search terms.
The most widely used search engine is Google. In order to have your website indexed, or to show up in a google search, is to program your website to rank higher in Google for a particular series of search terms.
For instance, if your website subject is centred around Home Decor, then if you search for Residential Decoration, you would expect your website to rank highly in Google's search results. The art to SEO is to think about what your customers will type into Google to find your website. The chances are, they're not going to type in your URL to find you, so they use Google. If you want these people to find your site, you have to centre your content and keywords to reflect the terms they will search for in Google.
