FAQ - Internet Basics

Since the conception of the internet, there has never been so many abbreviations, new words, new terms and names for things that a lot of people hadn't heard of before. Terms such as CSS, HTML, PHP, MySQL and more have popped up over the years and here, we shall try and explain the basics that pertain to what we're offering here at Corrupted Design.

Programming Languages

There are literally hundreds of programming languages available for the internet. The most basic and widely used is HTML. HTML stands for Hyper Text Mark-up Language. It's basically the language which you program a website to show text, images and tells the server what to do to produce the web page in your browser when you type in a web address or URL.

Other programming languages that do virtually the same as HTML are: PHP, Perl, JavaScript and many, many more which we don't use too often.

CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets. CSS is the Web standard for programming the way a website looks. Without CSS, web pages would be a boring mess of text and images with no personality. A style sheet allows you to control the look and layout of your website.

MySQL is a database program. MySQL works hand in hand with PHP and HTML to produce information, server side calculations and information handling. Without MySQL and other database handling software, websites would be a nightmare to update and store information.

Common Website Terminology

Other terms such as Hosting, Server, Domains are covered on other the pages linked, but other common terms are Code, HTML Editor, Affiliate Schemes, Open Source... the list can go on forever. If you would like to know more, ask us.

Code

'Code' is a slang term in the industry meaning the code in which your website is written. Whether that be any of the standard programming language of any website.

HTML Editor

HTML Editor is a program that is used to write the coding of a website. For example, Notepad, Dreamweaver etc.

Affiliate Schemes

Affiliate Schemes are run by some websites in order to attract more visitors and sales. Usually website owners sign up for these schemes and place links on their websites advertising a service or product. When the link is clicked and a product is bought, the owner of the site that placed the link gets compensated, usually monetarily, for providing a customer. It is possible to make a lot of money doing this, or certainly as a supplementary income.

Open Source

Open Source usually refers to Software, which are programs that you can download to run on your own computer or website. Open source software is free software that programmers build to accentuate your website or to make your life a lot easier when you're wanting your website to do a certain thing. We use a form of open source software to run our forums. We use Simple Machines Forums.

The programmer will place a link to his website somewhere within the software that shows on the user's website. This is a form of advertising and by making a product that is free to use, provides a wider scope of attracting more visitors and regular visitors to the programmer's website.

Server

A server, or web server is where you transfer your pages of your website so that they show on the internet when pointing your browser to show your website.

Plug Ins

Plug ins are usually snippets of code that will show applications within a program or website. The search bar that we use on this website is a plug in from Google.
